DraftKings Fantasy NASCAR: Can-Am/Gatorade/Budweiser Duel No.1

DraftKings launched a NASCAR game last year, and it's added a little more drama to our Sundays (and Saturday nights) entering lineups every week. We're by no means experts, but with the amount of time we put into it every week I feel about 1% qualified to give a little bit of advice.

First let's go through the rules, because it's not as simple as the NASCAR points system.

CONTEST RULES

  • In each game, participants will be assigned a fixed salary cap of $50,000 that they can use to draft their entire 6-driver roster.
  • The Player Pool will consist of all drivers expected to participate in the upcoming race. Any missing drivers will not be added to the pool once DraftKings starts offering contests for that day. Driver salaries will also not change once DraftKings starts offering contests for that day.
  • Contest results and winners will be based on the total points scored across each entrant’s 6-driver roster (scoring summarized below).

TEAM ROSTERS

  • Rosters will consist of 6 drivers.

POINT SCORING

Drivers will accumulate points as follows:
  • Place Differential = +/- 1 PTs
  • Fastest Laps = +0.5 PTs
  • Laps Led = +0.25 PTs
  • Finishing Position Scoring
    • 1st: 46 PTs
    • 2nd: 42 PTs
    • 3rd: 41 PTs and so on
  • Scoring Notes:
    • Place Differential = (Starting Position) – (Finishing Position)
Example: If a driver starts in 20th position and finishes in 10th place then his Place Differential is +10.
    • A driver’s starting position is based solely on his qualifying position. If a driver's starting position changes between qualifying and the start of the race for any reason (backup car, driver change, etc.), the qualifying position will be used to calculate place differential.
    • Points for Finishing Positon and Place Differential will be updated in real-time during the race. Drivers will gain points as they move up in position and lose points as they drop in position.

OK, now let's get into it:

TOP PICKS
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. - $10,900 - Junebug starts 2nd and has placed in the top 9 in his last 4 duel races, including a win last year. It's a good bet that Chase Elliot will want to learn from the master of recent restrictor plate races. There's a shot Junior protects Chase, but I see the a repeat of practice tomorrow with the 88 leading the 24 around. He is the top guy value wise, but I can't leave him out of my line-up.
VALUE PICKS
  • David Ragan - $6,200 - For my value guys, I am almost always looking exclusively at starting position. You're asking for trouble when you go with guys who show speed in qualifying, but don't typically have it in the race. Ryan Blaney and Austin Dillon are repeat offenders of this. Give me a guy with positions to move that have mediocre cars everyday. At least an accident won't destroy your chances.
LINEUPS: 50/50 League (Safer bets)
  • The A's Picks
    • Dale Earnhardt Jr.  - $10,900
    • David Ragan - $6,200
    • Kevin Harvick - $10,400
    • Regan Smith - $5,800
    • Paul Menard - $7,700
    • Chase Elliot - $9,000
  • Analysis: Harvick's qualifying time was disallowed, so his official starting spot is last. I'm going with him here. What scares me is the three Penske Fords in this one. They work well together and will try to link up early. Also, if Harvick can't find anyone to work with quick he may elect to stay in the back. Regan Smith is the cheapest option and a solid restrictor plate racer. He won the Daytona Nationwide race in 2014. Paul Menard has a teammate in the pack, and aside from his crash in 2014 has duel finishes of 9th, 7th and 4th to his credit.
LINEUPS: Tournament League (Riskier bets)
  • The A's Picks (EDIT: Bayne to the rear for gear change, sticking with him)
    • Joey Logano - $10,200
    • Brad Keselowski - $9,800
    • Ryan Blaney - $7,800
    • David Ragan - $6,200
    • Trevor Bayne  - $7,300
    • Kasey Kahne - $8,700
  • Analysis: As I mentioned above, the Fords are scary. They love to run together and if one is up front, chances are all three will be. Trevor Bayne has a Daytona pedigree and is also in a Ford, plus he's starting 17th. Kasey Kahne starts in the middle of the pack and has finishes of 7th or better in his last three duel starts, including two 2nd place finishes. If he latches on to the 24 or 88 behind the Fords, he will give you value.
