Real Talk Turn 4- Kobalt 400
My answer's to ESPN's Turn 4 column with no insider knowledge, no political correctness and no holding back.
Turn 1: So much was made about the new aero package and the hopes it will "fix" the racing on 1.5-mile tracks. What was your first impression from Vegas?
We, the rest of Jr. nation and whatever the hell you call Keselowski fans (Deucers?) got plenty of excitement out of the race, but that's because Jr. was the fastest car for alot of it and Keselowski got lucky and stole a win. Besides that, the 1.5 mile track didn't strike me as much different than in past years. Track position is extremely important and once you get out in clean air it's very hard for someone to run you down.
Turn 2: A lot of gnashing of teeth over the racing at Bristol Motor Speedway in recent seasons, but will the new rules lead to some real bumping and banging on Sunday?
I think the top 5 or so drivers will be more aggressive late in the race trying to get the win. That doesn't mean I think there's going to be wrecking balls out there driving for the win. All things considered (basically if it's a fun track or 1.5 mile cookie cutter), this season is 3 for 3 on producing relatively to extremely entertaining races and I think this Sunday will be another good one.
Turn 3: Although Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he wouldn't have "gambled" under the old system, was it really a gamble when he was just half a lap short?
I am so sick of the gambling references. The amount that we heard on Sunday because the race was at Vegas was ridiculous. That being said, this was a gamble compared to if the old chase system was in place. Risking running out of gas and falling alot of positions last year would have been much more important in the standings last year than it was this year. Jr. definitely "gambled" this weekend because he took a chance on whether or not he would run out of gas, but it wasn't a risky gamble.
Turn 4: Is Tony Stewart's leg affecting him in the car more than he's letting on?
I hope that's what it is. That means as Tony's injury continues to heal, he'll get himself back into Chase competition. The Chase with Tony Stewart in it is definitely more exciting. I'm not so sure that's what it is though. Between him and Kurt Busch, Stewart-Haas racing has not looked good at all so far. Obviously Harvick has been great besides breaking down at Vegas, which gives hope that the team can figure it out and Danica could be put in a rocketship and would still come in 25th so you can't really judge the team based on her performance.
TheDaleGuys Fantasy Recap-Vegas-Kobalt 400
The E won his second week in a row, with a win from Keselowski anchoring the victory. First round pick Clint Bowyer is shaping up to be the worst one on the team. The L had another solid week, with Jamie Mac continuing his strong start to hold down the 4 spot. The ! finally gets out of the basement and came in third for the week and the A's top 2 let him down, with Harvick blowing up and Tony looking like the worst driver for Stewart-Haas racing. Tony Stewart has gotten off to a terrible start, similar to last season. Can he turn it around as we get deeper in the year like he started to last year before breaking his leg?

Despite the E winning the last 2 weeks, L is still holding on to a solid lead thanks to his great performance at the Daytona 500. The standings are really starting to spread out between the league, but as the A proved this week it doesn't take much to drop 30-60 points to the rest of the field in one week. I have a feeling the standings will bunch up and spread out many times throughout the season before a champion is crowned (except for the ! he's probably gonna bring up the rear the whole season).

QuickTakes Reaction from Today- Kobalt 400
Today was a serious rollercoaster of emotions. I'm kind of drunk and trying to process it all right now. Here are my initial reactions, maybe y'all agree or think differently.
1. Man this season is gonna be fun- riding with the #2XDaytona500Champ this season basically assures that our driver will be in the Chase. That means that winning is the only thing that matters. Taking chances is gonna be the name of the game this season and that means we'll have some serious highs (Dale will win more races this season, I guarantee it) and some lows...which I'll get in to now
2. I was ok, then I was real sad- I was telling myself through the last 50+ laps that it didn't matter if we ran out. Then we got to the last lap and I got really excited. I figured since Dale ran out on the last lap a few years back at Charlotte, this time he'd catch a break and not run out on the last lap again. I let my excitement get the best of me and forgot that Stevie had projected he'd run out with a half lap to go. Of course he's a great crew chief and was right on the money and riding that high left me disappointed. You could tell Jr. felt the same way in his post race interview. Don't worry man you're still having a great season and will win some more this season.
3. Those last 58 laps were real fun- even if it didn't end up with a win those laps after the last Jr. pit stop and especially after the last caution were awesome! Watching Dale pull away from the pack was so exciting. Then watching Dale trying to save gas and letting Keselowski catch him was pretty scary. Dale reminded us all that he had a great car once Keselowski caught him though and easily held him off/ran away from the deuce.
4. 2nd is still better than 5th- At the end of the day, if you can't get a win you still want to get as many points as possible. @jeffmeintzer brought up a great point.
If the 88 team hadn't risked it and pitted with everyone else they would've restarted 5th and may have moved up to 3rd or 4th like Joey. At a track like Vegas you aren't catching the leaders from a few spots back. Dale still finished 2nd today, which is as good (probably better) than he would've finished if he had played it safe and pitted during the last caution.

TheDaleGuys Fantasy Recap- Phoenix- The Profit by CNBC
What a week for me (the E)! 4 drivers in the top 12. The A got redemption for having L swipe Dale from him with the second pick by having his first pick, Harv, win the race. With how good we're all expecting Harvick to do this season he's gone put Outback out of business with all the free bloomin onions they're gonna give away (and probably contribute to me gaining 5-10 pounds). Everyone knows, Harvick opens beers and closes races.
The ! is meeting the preseason projections and still being worse at fantasy than Danica is at racing NASCAR. He's probably gonna go wire to wire in DFL this year. It's still early, but the L is dominating. Jr.'s puttin' the team on his back doe!!

We took our new seats above the start finish line, and the engines roared. At this point, I still haven't even considered Junebug winning this damn thing even though he's looking strong in the front pack. As everyone has said, this was some of the most intense racing I've ever seen. Everyone wanted to be up front. This intensity was so overwhelming, we had a few nappers up in the stands. Must've been a long day or something.Saturday, March 1, 2014
Race Preview: Phoenix- The Profit on CNBC 500, Presented by Small Business Fueling America
What's the first thing you think about this race? Why the hell is the name so long and confusing. I know the sponsored race names can get interesting (and by interesting I mean boring), but this may be the most ridiculous one I've ever seen, slightly edging out Party in the Poconos 400 Presented by Walmart. Can't hate it though, go small business.

I'm still on a high from Daytona, but let's move on to Phoenix. Dale has a pretty solid average finish here of 11 since the 2012 season, which is good for 7th among active drivers. Here's a fun fact: Juan Pablo was 7th on the list of highest average finishes since 2012. Who would've thought?
Penske had an awesome round of qualifying, taking the top row. But more importantly, Dale has also looked great so far, qualifying 5th, being the fastest in Friday practice and 4th fastest in the Saturday morning practice. Gotta be pumped to see the position he's putting himself in early on, especially at a track like Phoenix where track position is important. My second place pick (since Jr. is obviously going back to back this weekend) from the RTT4 blog was Denny Hamlin, who qualified 11th. Just to be clear, I'm not proud of this pick.
